Metal vs. Cedar Raised Garden Beds: Which Lasts Longer?

Metal and cedar are the two most popular raised bed materials — but they perform very differently depending on your climate and budget. If you've narrowed your raised bed search down to material, odds are you're choosing between the two most popular options: metal and cedar. Both are solid choices — but they perform differently depending on your climate, budget, and how long you want the bed to last. Here's how they actually compare.

The Short Answer

Metal beds generally outlast cedar — a galvanized steel bed can last 20+ years, while even untreated cedar tends to hold up for 10–15. But "lasts longer" isn't the only thing that matters. Cedar costs less upfront, is easier to customize, and doesn't have metal's heat-retention issue in hot climates. The right choice depends on what you're optimizing for.

Longevity

Cedar is naturally rot- and insect-resistant thanks to oils in the wood, which is why it's the go-to lumber for raised beds instead of standard pine. Left untreated, a well-built cedar bed typically lasts 10–15 years before the wood breaks down enough to need replacing. Board thickness matters here — thicker boards (1.5" or more) outlast thin ones by several years.

Metal, specifically galvanized steel, doesn't rot, doesn't attract termites or carpenter ants, and isn't vulnerable to fungal decay the way wood is. A quality galvanized bed can realistically last two decades or more with essentially no maintenance. The one failure point to watch for: cheap painted steel (rather than true galvanized) will rust once the paint chips, so it's worth checking which you're actually buying.

Winner: Metal, by a meaningful margin — but cedar's 10–15 year lifespan is still long enough that many gardeners never end up needing a second bed anyway.

Heat and Plant Health

This is the tradeoff that surprises a lot of first-time metal bed buyers. Metal conducts heat, and a dark-colored steel bed in full sun can raise soil temperature noticeably compared to wood — sometimes enough to stress roots near the bed's edges in peak summer heat.

In practice, this matters most in hot climates and for beds under 12" deep, where roots sit closer to the metal walls. It matters far less in mild or cooler climates, and lighter-colored or lined metal beds reduce the effect substantially.

Cedar doesn't have this issue at all — wood insulates rather than conducts, so soil temperature stays more stable regardless of climate.

Winner: Cedar, if you're in a hot climate or building shallow beds. A non-issue in cooler regions.

Cost

Cedar and metal are closer in price than people expect, and where they land depends heavily on size and brand.

Cedar: Lower cost per board foot, but larger beds require more material and more assembly labor (or cost, if pre-built) Metal: Often sold as complete kits, which can mean lower total cost for larger beds since there's no separate lumber-buying and cutting involved

For a small bed (under 4x4'), cedar is typically the cheaper option. For larger beds, pre-fab metal kits frequently come out even or cheaper once you account for cedar's per-board pricing at scale.

Winner: Depends on size — cedar for small beds, metal often wins on larger ones.

Appearance

This one's purely personal preference, but worth naming: cedar gives the traditional garden look most people picture when they think "raised bed" — natural wood tone that weathers to a soft gray over time. Metal beds read as more modern, with a clean industrial look that's become popular in contemporary garden design. Neither is objectively better; it's about which fits your space.

Maintenance

Cedar needs essentially no maintenance to function, though some gardeners apply a food-safe linseed oil every few years to slow weathering (purely cosmetic — it doesn't meaningfully extend lifespan).

Metal needs even less — an occasional rinse if soil buildup collects at the base is about all it requires. There's no refinishing, no rot to watch for, nothing to reapply.

Winner: Metal, marginally — though cedar's maintenance needs are low enough that this rarely tips a decision on its own.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose cedar if:

You're in a hot climate and worried about soil temperature You want the classic wood garden look You're building a smaller bed where cedar's cost advantage matters You like the option to customize dimensions or add features (trellis mounts, corner joints) yourself

Choose metal if:

You want the longest possible lifespan with the least maintenance You're building a larger bed where kit pricing is competitive You're in a mild or cool climate where heat retention isn't a concern You prefer a modern look over a natural wood one

Neither material is a wrong choice — both, properly built, will give you years of solid growing seasons. The decision mostly comes down to matching the material to your climate and how long you want to go before thinking about your bed again.
