Large heirloom cabbage from 1889 with deep red heads that are both colorful and tasty. According to F.B. Mills 1936 catalog: “The largest of the Red Cabbages and the most sure heading, also the best for pickling”. Those good storing cabbages produce 5-8 pound flattened round heads. Plant them in good soil 1/2 inch deep and 2 inches apart. Transplant your seedlings about 4 weeks before the last anticipated frost, spacing them 12 to 18 inches apart in rows 3 to 4 feet apart, and burying the stems about midway up. Direct sow or transplant seedlings in the middle of summer for a fall harvest. Avoid planting cabbage alongside pole beans or tomatoes for the benefits of companion planting; instead, plant it with aromatic herbs or potatoes.
